Flaxman Wines

News image

After visiting the Barossa for 10 years and working vintage with Andrew Seppelt at Murray Street Vineyards in Greenock, the decision to make the move from Melbourne, where Colin was working as a builder, was made. We were lucky enough to find a small old vineyard overlooking Flaxmans Valley. A proven Shiraz and Riesling area with names like Three Rivers, Pewsey Vale and Heggies as neighbours we knew the vineyard had real potential. The property consists of 2 ½ acres of 45+ year old Riesling, ½ acre of 45+ year old Semillon and 2 acres of 55+ year old Shiraz.

It is our belief that great wines are made in the vineyard. To that end all our vines are dry grown, hand pruned and hand picked. We keep our yields low about 1 ½ tonnes to the acre and basically treat the vineyard as our garden, right down to mowing our midrows with a ride-on mower to help prevent soil compaction. We also buy a small amount of Shiraz and Cabernet from vineyards with similar goals as us. We select individual rows which we believe best suit our needs and this fruit is used for our Shiraz Cabernet blend (60% Shiraz – 40% cabernet) which is called “The Stranger” as the fruit isn’t from our vineyard.

Colin works vintage for Murray St Vineyards in Greenock during which time he also makes all the Flaxman wines. The red wines are made in a traditional style, open fermenters, piggage and basket pressing and the whites are whole bunch pressed; the Semillon has the cordons cut approx 3 weeks prior to picking.

Balthazar & Ishtar of the Barossa

The first Balthazar of the Barossa vines were planted by winemaker Anita Bowen in 1998 on what was an original 19th century vineyard. The shiraz vines were painstakingly sourced from one of the oldest known vineyards in the Barossa Valley, whose origins date back to 1847.

Who was Balthazar?

Balthazar was the last of the Babylonian Kings, who incurred God's wrath by ordering the drinking of wine out of holy silver and gold chalices. Legend dictates that while Balthazar, his wives and concubines feasted and drank wine, the Persians invaded, bringing an end to Babylonian rule. It is also after this Babylonian King that the 12-litre wine bottle is named.

Golding Wines

News image

Golding Wines is a small and dynamic family owned winery situated at Lenswood, high in the picturesque Adelaide Hills of South Australia. The family vineyard was established by Darren Golding, together with his parents, Connie and Greg, in 1995. In 2002, Darren and wife Lucy launched the first Golding Wines vintage.

The Lenswood region is traditionally known for its top grade apple orchards. A local fruit merchant, Greg was well acquainted with the area and realised the potential of the region for growing premium quality grapes - free draining soils, mild summer days, cool crisp nights and plenty of rainfall.

The family property now includes over 50 acres of vines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Savagnin varieties. Over the years, we have supplied fruit to some of Australia's most recognised wine brands - Hardy's, Tatachilla, Petaluma and Yalumba.

Today, our passion is the creation of premium cool climate wines that genuinely break new ground. The majority of our range is made with only the most outstanding hand selected fruit from our own vineyards, providing a captivating reflection of our region's unique character.

Our property remains a much loved home for Connie, Greg and extended family. We regularly welcome guests from around Australia and overseas, many of whom have chosen our stunning vineyard as a very unique location for weddings, birthday parties and other special celebrations.

The Old Faithful

News image

McLaren Vale is home to some of the most treasured Old Vine plantings in the world today, with the earliest known plantings dating back to 1862.
We affectionately refer to them as “The Old Faithful”. They are a resource we treasure dearly.

The Old Faithful project is an exciting Joint Venture Partnership with John Larchet a 50% owner, and a Quartet
of “vinous” folk owning the other 50%. The “Quartet” of Nick Haselgrove, Warren Randall, Warren Ward and Andrew Fletcher not only share great talents in viticulture and oenology, but are Owners of a multiplicity of the most prized dry grown Old Vine vineyards across McLaren Vale. This is definitely a unique partnership that is intent on producing modest quantities of truly distinctive wines. All Partners share their belief in the magic of “The Old Faithful”.
